Golfers have been competing all golf season to qualify for the end of year Crystal Cup Shootout Finals scheduled to be played at Ballyowen Golf Club on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 28 teams of golfers gathered to see if they could be added to the list of those who had qualified in earlier Crystal Cup Qualifier Tournaments held during the golf season.

This final qualifying event featured a 4-golfer team scramble format in which each golfer hit their golf shot and the team selects the best of the 4 shots and plays that ball repeating this process through the completion of the hole and the 18 holes of the event.

At the end of play prizes were awarded to the top two teams with the lowest low gross and low net scores after the reduction of the team handicap. The team of Tom Freemen, Tom Freeman Jr., Sean Ruane and Jim Ruane scored a 13 under par 59 to win first place honors in the low gross category after a match of cards to determine the winner due the second place team of Don Hemberger, Ricky Hemberger, Richard Thomson and Rob Thomson achieving the same score.

A match of cards is performed by comparing the scores carded by teams that had submitted score cards that totaled the same lowest scores beginning with the most difficult golf hole determined by handicap until the team that scored the best score on the given golf hole is identified.

The low-net winning team of Jack Longa, Own Rynn, George Leeman and Charles Grod also was determined by a match of card due to the second place team of Ed Lemire, Bob Mosier, Jim Conrad and John Brandt carding the same score of 19 under par 53.

Prizes were also awarded to the best performers in three skill competitions, longest drive for men and women on hole No. 18, closet to the pin on hole No. 11 and closest to the pin on the second shot on hole No. 3. Tom Freeman Jr. out drove Joe Pompa to win the men’s long drive prize with Dona Wallerius to win the long drive competition for the women. Bob Mossier’s tee shot that came to rest 3 feet 7 inches from the pin was good enough to take the prize for closest to the pin and “Burner Bob” Wallerius’ second shot on the 3rd hole at the Crystal Springs Golf Club was 8 feet 1 inch from the pin to win the prize.
