  • The top performing Sussex Team of Robert and Dona Wallerius receive their prizes from Crystal Springs Event hosts.

  • Golfers participating in the 4th MAT Ryder Cup Tournament at the Ballyowen Golf Club.

  • Team World golfers Ann Mackey and Gerald Papa were protective glasses to watch the eclipse during play.

The 4th Crystal Springs Member Appreciation Crystal Cup Qualifier was special for two reasons; it followed a Ryder Cup Format in which members competed as Team Sussex County against Team World while the sun was being eclipsed by the moon.

The event was held on Monday, Aug. 21, at the Ballyowen Golf Club.

The member golfers were divided into two team, Team Sussex County and Team World to compete following a Ryder Cup type format in which teams of two golfers competed against each other following a best ball of two format with the low score of the two player team carded and the lowest of the team scores declared the winner of the hole. The team with the lowest total score earned points toward their team's Ryder Cup score. At the end of the competition each team had won 3 matches resulting in a tie. The teams that recorded the best scores were also awarded prizes and points toward qualifying to compete in the Crystal Cup Championship scheduled to be played on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

To make the event more fun, the tournament was played on the same day as the eclipse of the sun by the moon which did not have an impact on play because of clouds over the sun and some teams wearing protective sun glasses to avoid eye damage if they chose to take a look at the eclipse during play.

The competition among players for top honors was very tight. The top team of the day was the Team Sussex pair of golfers Dona and Robert Wallerius with a score of 13 under par 59 just one stroke ahead of the second-place team of Robert Mosier and Edmund Lemire who scored 12 under 60, also from Team Sussex. Second place had to be determined by a match of cards with the team of Kenneth Dykstra and Kory Rosenberg also carding a score of 12 under par 60.

Prizes were also awarded to male and female golfers who were able to hit the longest drive and hit their tee shot closest to the pin on designated golf holes. Robert Wallerius was the winner of the longest drive competition for the Men, with Eun Kang winning the competition for the ladies. To make it a family affair Dona Wallerius was the lady’s closest to the pin winner on hole #4 with a shot measured 27’ from the pin. Joe Giammarino took the prize men’s closest to the pin win with his tee shot coming to rest 7’4“ from the pin on hole #15.

The Crystal Springs Resort’s Events Calendar continues to include the popular 9 n Dine Tournaments on Fridays at the Black Bear Golf Club and Thursdays at the Ballyowen Golf Club featuring a two player scramble format playing 9 holes of golf and then a delicious buffet dinner in the club house with prizes. The finals of the Sussex County Long Drive Championship are scheduled to be held the Black Bear Golf Course on Friday, Sept. 1, beginning at 5 p.m. followed on Saturday, Sept. 2, with the Parent/Youth Tournament at Minerals Golf Club.
